People and Life in Kirbati
People: The people of Kiribati live by values,
which include the importance of family, hospitality, peace and tranquility and
enjoy making time for conversation and time to relax. They are renowned
traditional dancers and floorshows featuring such entertainment can be enjoyed
during festive occasions at the village Maneaba (traditional meeting
halls).
Population: The 2000 census figures showed that the
population of Kiribati was 84, 494. Estimates for 2002 shows the population has
reached a figure of more than 96, 000.
Languages: The main
language is I-Kiribati. On the capital Tarawa, English is widely understood but
less so on the outer islands.
Dress: Dress is normally very casual. The tropical
climate and simple lifestyle of the islanders encourages cool, cotton, loosely
outfits for men and women.
