The Islands’ role in World War II is
evident in the battle of Tarawa, during which thousands of American and Japanese
lives were lost. Betio Islet where one of the bloodiest ever fought in
World War II now left with memorable scars of war relics. Abemama Island is an important historical site being the first island at which Captain Davis hoisted the Union Jack in 1892. It was also on this island that the famed Robert Louis Stevenson resided in 1889. Butaritari Island, the greenest island, was famous for the traditional art of ‘binekua’, or the (calling of the whales to come ashore) by Kuma Villagers. | |
